Medical Marijuana and the Diseases It Helps?
For much of humankind’s relationship with cannabis throughout the ages, cannabis was considered a miracle, magical or religious plant. The medicinal and healing properties that marijuana infuses into its users has never been fully understood until recently. However, current advances in scientific analysis and machinery have allowed us to more completely understand the compounds that actually explain how medical marijuana works.
First of all, what is medical marijuana?
“Medical marijuana” is the term used to refer to all of the parts of the unprocessed and usable parts of the mature female cannabis plant that is used to treat an illness or improve the symptoms of a disease or condition. Medicinal grade cannabis, especially in the United States, is meticulously grown with the thorough care of highly trained, registered farmers without the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers.
The incredible healing effects of medical marijuana primarily come from a mix of high levels of several different cannabinoids that the plant produces in its female flowers as it matures. The most well-known and therapeutic of them all is known as CBD (cannabidiol). Other marijuana compounds that have been documented to have medicinal and healing properties are terpenes and flavonoids (which also provide marijuana with its distinct flavors and tastes) which are available in critical levels in medical-grade cannabis. Obviously the most well-known marijuana cannabinoid, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), also has some medicinal effects as well but it primarily gives medical marijuana patients the psychoactive effect that marijuana is most known for. Because of this reason many growers and breeders have started growing and creating certain medical-grade cannabis strains that have increasingly higher levels of CBD and relatively lower levels of THC in order to skew the therapeutic effect of the plants even more for those patients in need.
How does medical marijuana work?
Cannabis and its various effects are due wholly to the fact that we evolved with a very complicated and diverse series of naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors. These cannabinoid receptors are located all over our bodies. They have been documented and found in our brains, lungs, kidneys, liver and immune system. Cannabinoid receptors play a critical role in many of your body’s processes. They have an effect on your immune function, bone growth, pain, anxiety, metabolic regulation and food cravings. Also, if we didn’t have any cannabinoid receptors in our bodies, then ingesting marijuana in any form would have absolutely no effect on us whatsoever. But because of these cannabinoid receptors, a cannabinoid molecule can enter a human body and cause a cannabis patient to feel and heal from the effects of medical marijuana.
What diseases does medical marijuana help treat? Medical marijuana uses are quite varied and some are even extremely ancient. Medicinal quality cannabis has been known to help malignant, cancerous tumors to become smaller or completely disappear. At the very least it often brings an appetite back to many patients going through chemotherapy or other similarly harsh treatments for their illnesses.
Our miracle plant has also been known to help with other lesser (but still serious) ailment and diseases such as:
- AIDS (HIV) and AIDS Wasting Syndrome
- Hepatitis C
- Mood disorders
- Chron’s disease and other digestion related diseases
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Degenerative neurological diseases such as dystonia and others
- Epilepsy and seizures
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Pain relief and management, migraines
- and the list goes on and on…
